HEAVY rain forced the early abandonment of play on day two of the West Indian’s tour match with Essex at Chelmsford.

Having declared their first innings at 338/8 off 100 overs, the West Indies made early inroads into the Essex top order. Varun Chopra was removed without scoring, caught by Kyle Hope off a delivery from Kemar Roach, then the right-arm fast bowler swiftly removed both Dan Lawrence and Adam Wheater leaving the home side floundering on 19/3.

Essex’s continued to struggle, with skipper Ryan ten Doeschate next making his way back to the pavilion, trapped lbw by Miguel Cummins.

Roach proved to be the pick of the tourists attack with figures of 3/17, while Nick Browne was unbeaten on 16, with Essex 47/4 when the inclement weather ensured no further play was possible for the day.

Play resumes on Thursday at 11am
