A FIRE at a Basildon scrap yard last week was an accident, firefighters have ruled.
Six fire crews were scrambled to Harvey Road last Thursday, February 2, after receiving reports tha 20 tonnes of crushed cars were alight.
Firefighters arrived shortly after 6.40pm and found the fire had spread to three lorries and nearby machinery.
It took two hours to extinguish the blaze, which the fire service has now confirmed was later found to have been an accident.
Station officer Howard Midwood, from Basildon fire station, said: “Our firefighters did an excellent job controlling this fire, which could have spread and caused a lot of damage to this business.
“Crews managed to stop the fire spreading to the three lorries which were parked nearby and only sustained very little superficial damage.”
*An earlier report by the fire service had stated that it was 20 tonnes of cardboard which was alight.
