Five things to do this Sunday...

By Liz Wade in Events

IF you are not sure what to do today – Sunday, February 5 – then why not go to one of these events?

Snowdrop Sunday at Hedingham Castle, Castle Hedingham:

The castle’s winter gardens are possibly one of the most romantic in the East of England so why not explore them today from 11am to 4pm?

At least 13 varieties of snowdrops cover the steep slopes of the motte and bailey and sett off the trees and lakes in front of the Georgian mansion house.

The cafe will be open for the sale of mulled wine and other refreshments, and there will be free guided tours of the keep.

Entrance will be £8.50 for adults, £7.50 for over 65s, £6 for under 18s, and £25 for families, with children under five getting in for free.

Optics Day at Abberton Reservoir Visitor Centre, Colchester:

Head to the reserve’s visitor centre today from 10am to 4pm, and get help and advice from its optics team.

If you are just starting out birdwatching and do not know where to begin, or are looking to upgrade those old binoculars or thinking about getting your first telescope, then this is the event for you.

Its range of binoculars, telescopes, tripods and accessories, mainly Opticron and Hawke, have been carefully selected for quality, price and value-for-money and will be on display so you can try before you buy.

There will also be special offers and secondhand available, with all profits going to Essex Wildlife Trust to support its conservation work around the county.

Snowdrop Planting at Thames Chase Forest Centre, Upminster:

Join staff and volunteers at Thames Chase Forest Centre, at Broadfields, Pike Lane, Upminster, today from 10am onwards and help them plant snowdrops.

A total of 500 snowdrop bulbs need to be planted in the gardens and hedgerows around the Forest Centre, so take all the family along and help out.

Remember to wear suitable clothing and shoes and take along a trowel.

Loughton Astronomical Society’s public observing event:

Join members of the Loughton Astronomical Society during its public observing event this evening, from 6.30pm to 8.45pm.

The event, which takes place at the 1st Theydon Bois Scout Hall, in Maple Close, Theydon Bois, next to the cricket club is free to attend and the whole family is welcome.

Volunteer Recruitment Open Afternoon at Paycocke’s House and Garden:

If you fancy being a part of history then head to Paycocke’s House and Gardens, in West Street, Coggeshall, Colchester, today from 12.30pm to 3.30pm.

Find out more about getting involved in sharing the stories of Paycocke’s House and Coggeshall Grange Barn.

Meet some of the volunteers and find out what they enjoy about volunteering and whether it is right for you.

Have a cup of tea and a chat, and find out more about what happens and how you can get involved.
